New 4-H Year!

Don't forget to e-mail to let Amanda know if you are joining 4-H and/or continuing.

Our annual business meeting will be October 6 from 5:30 to 7:00, please be on time for us to START at 5:30.  Snack will be provided around 6:00.

4-H Officer buttons

We will have officer candidate speeches and elect officers!

We will vote on projects for the year!

We need to set the budget and review the constitution!

We need to decide how we will communicate, through this blog, or using a Google classroom.

We also need to decide on Cloverbucks.

Look for an e-mail the week before the meeting with the agenda and all these things to review before the meeting.  OR start reviewing now!

If you want to run for office, let Amanda know asap!

TSC Paper Clover Event

A Tractor Supply Paper Clover Event is a time and place for HH 4-H to do some fundraising, 4-H promotion, and public speaking.

We set up a table in the store with our club TT, some 4-H promotional material on the table, and maybe someone's well-behaved pullets, and we talk to customers about 4-H AND High Hopes!

We have the option of setting up October 8, 9, 15, or 16 (or more than one day.  Should probably be 9:00 to 1:00 or 2:00 on Saturdays, and Sundays maybe 10:00 to 1:00.  Youth should probably work not longer than 2 hour shifts, 3 or 4 kids per shift, and we should make sure we've got someone outgoing in each shift.

One person stays at the table talking to customers, one person hovers near the registers inviting people to buy a paper clover when they check out.  The third person can float as needed when it's busy, and rotate so everyone gets breaks.

Parents are welcome to stay, but should let the kids do the talking!  Even new 4-H'ers can come and help, they can say what they hope to do and learn.

Poultry and Livestock

It's time once again for Poultry and Livestock.

So, we've got our chicks in our brooders, and it's time to start learning for real!

Do you want to learn about any other types of livestock, besides poultry?  Comment below (with your name!).  (Sheepses?)!  And, please add some goals for the other livestock you are interested in.

As always, with animal projects, try to come up with one goal each for health, caring, nutrition, parts, handling, equipment, and then general knowledge.

Check the calendar for dates.  We're scheduled to meet May 26, but I hear that June 2 is a school event for some, so comment below and let us know what is going on in your lives!

We need to be very careful about Avian Influenza, but right now, the new chicks should be old and feathered enough to come to the late June meeting.  We'll talk as a group about how we feel about the risks involved

Tell me if you need to borrow a carrier to bring your birds back and forth to the meetings.

Horse

 Basic Requirement

Learn about horses in a systematic and comprehensive way guided by a leader or mentor.  Spend 6 to 8 hours working towards your goals and improving your knowledge.

Optional Horseless Activities

Knowledge Contests

Quiz Bowl – A game like Jeopardy, questions are asked, and members push their buzzer if they know the answer.  QB is an excellent additional source of horse knowledge.  Can be participated in at the club level, county, state, and out of state levels.

Judging – A contest where the conformation and breed type of horses are judged.

Excellent for learning about breeds, riding styles, and learning to make informed comparisons.  Club level, state, and out of state levels also available.

Hippology – An all-encompassing contest with a written part, hands-on identification of items, questions answered about presented slides, measuring various items, and more.  Fantastic for identifying the all-around horseperson.  Can be participated in at the club level, region, state, and out of state levels.

Communications – There are 3 different types of public speaking: Individual Speech, Individual Demonstration, and Team Demo.  Members learn research and public speaking skills.  Can be participated in at the club level, region, state, and out of state levels.

Optional with a Horse

Hands on – Some members may own their own horse. Members may also make private arrangements to: care for, take riding lessons, ride, or lease a horse.  Hands on horse care can be arranged at any equine facility where there is a safe learning environment.  Members who have access to a horse are encouraged to play an active role caring for it (including things like: clean the horse’s living space; halter and lead the horse in and/or out; groom; care for the horse’s water; feed; and do general barn care).  If the opportunity to be present for, or assist in health care is available, that is a beneficial part of learning as well.

Optional Showing - Riding and Horseless

Horseless - The State 4-H Horse Show and Champlain Valley Fair 4-H Show have Horseless classes which include Judging, and a variation of the knowledge contests, either Quiz Bowl, General Knowledge questions, or a written test.

Riding - To show a horse in 4-H, the member must be taking care of that horse as of April 1 of the current year, and must fill out an Equine Identification/Approval form and turn it in by May 1.

4-H Shows

The Vermont 4-H Horse Show is a 4-day über-fun horse show, for both Horseless members and members with horses.

The CV Fair 4-H Horse Show is free to enter and 4-H members can earn prize money.  You must enter by August 1.  For Horseless members also!

Cloverbuds

High Hopes 4-H Club Cloverbud Program

Reminder, here is the link to how we run our CB program.

Here is a link to a planning document to sign up to lead a project.  Each CB should have a parent lead a meeting!  You all can decide how/if you want to use this as is.

I'll be getting some space cleared out in the science lab for CB's.  It's chillier there, so shoes and a sweatshirt would be a good idea.

Engineering

Engineering!  Just for gear heads?  NOT!

This year's engineering is going to be different from years past.

Solve a Problem

Can you think of a problem that you would like to fix?  Want your pet to be able to come into and out of your room -- with the door closed -- without getting up?  Want to keep the dogs out of the chicken food?  Or, on a bigger scale, are there folk who need help watering their gardens for some reason?  One of the engineering challenges this year invites you to design something that can solve a problem!

Do something simple but fun!

The other engineering challenge invites you to do something simple... as challengingly as possible!  Want to pour a bowl of cereal?  Well push this lever, and it will knock a ball down a ramp which rolls into a cup that drops down pulling a string that winds a spring that releases a weight which falls onto a pedal and pushes the box of cereal over so your bowl fills.  Voila, breakfast!  Simple really... well, not really!

Are you an artist?
Engineering is for you too!  Engineers design things for a user, that user is most often human.  Humans like things to look nice as well as work well!  Understanding proportions is a key element in art, it is also central to engineering.  Do you know who painted The Mona Lisa?  Some say Davinci was an artist, but engineers claim him as one of their own.  He drew a small sketch of a bridge, so accurately, with such precision, that an engineering student from MIT was able to measure his drawing and build a model, and it is one of the most attractive as well as effective simple bridge designs ever!

Artists and Engineers both need to study things as they are in order to make decisions on what they want to create.

I have a problem I need solved!

My sheep waste a LOT of hay, and what they don't waste, they eat too quickly.  Soon, they aren't going to fit through the door of their house!  They look like cotton balls with short toothpicks stuck in the bottom as it is.  I have tried all kinds of hay feeders designed for sheep and all kinds of other animals, but they still just gobble up what I give them too quickly or pull it out onto the floor.  I don't have time to feed them three times per day, in fact, I would rather feed them once every three days, and the time I spend feeding them now, I could play with them!  Anyone want to work on solving this problem for me?

So, be sure you have the engineering packets, which are in the cooler on my porch, and everyone, please join us for a virtual Introduction to this project on Thursday, Jan. 20!

Chick order!

Go to the Murray McMurray website and look at chicks!  In comments below, list the chick(s) you are ordering this year and the criteria you selected to choose that or those bird(s).  Please give me your 1st and 2nd choice.  Send your choices by Saturday night so I can order on Sunday!

This is what I know about who is ordering what chicks - If I have something incorrect, just let me know!  Here is a link to my organizing document if you want the details.

If you are going to play with chicks that will eventually live at my farm, I might negotiate with you what breeds we get...  I want Better or Best egg production, cold hardy and some particulars in color eggs and color chickens, but we can bargain!
